What is King Crimson the rock group from the 1970s and onward?

I've definitely heard of them. They "were" around in the 70's. Used to listen to them. But, I wuz "stoned" back in those times. The only song I can remember was one called, "Court of the Crimson King". They were a heavy metal or, acid rock group.
